Beijing to Hong Kong: First planes, now trains…

We left Beijing yesterday morning, taking a 25-hour journey by sleeper train to Hong Kong. Here are some pics of the train and our compact, but comfortable-enough rooms on the train:

The Chinese countryside: I’m not entirely sure what I expected to see along the ride, perhaps some mountainous terrain dotted with farms and towns of varying size, and there was quite a bit of that. But I did not expect to see so MANY small & medium towns of an industrial character, nor the clusters of depressingly identical apartment complexes … they ran on in similar form for miles and miles, town after town. Below are a handful of photos of the 1538-mile journey:

Hong Kong Airbnb: We arrived in Hong Kong about midday today (June 11) and made our way to our Airbnb — quite a luxurious pad compared to the accommodations thus far. Below are a few shots of the Airbnb, the view of Hong Kong island from the apartment:

Temple Street Night Market: Finally, Zoe and I had enough energy left to venture out this evening, and so we went to the Temple Street Night Market — a craptastic experience, inasmuch as they sell literally everything you can imagine but do not need, all in a 3-block area — some pics of that are below:
