Bob Kennedy insists that I post my impressions, so — for Bob — I am overcoming my innate fear of new technology to blog the following observations on Japan.
The first thing I noticed in Tokyo is that all the advertisements with cartoons depict the people as white westerners — the photographs are of Japanese people, but every cartoon (with the exception of the theater posters) is a white smiling westerner. Weird.
Speaking of Japanese people, the women in Tokyo were giving me an inferiority complex — so many of them were so incredibly stylish and beautiful.
I liked Tokyo even more than I thought I would. It’s MASSIVE and crowded, yet extremely clean. Even the subways are pristine. There’s no trash anywhere and, yet, there is not a trash can in sight — again, weird! Any time we had trash, we had to carry it around for a half hour before we could find a trash can. I don’t understand what these people do with their trash — David’s theory is that they eat their own trash.
Tokyo also has usually attractive manhole covers.
Zoe and I also found a cat cafe in Tokyo! The kitties don’t make up for missing Buddy, of course, but we loved petting them anyway.
I’m also surprised at how much I like the food — even the sushi! There was only one place where I starved while everyone else ate.
Zoe has been so great at helping David navigate where we’re going, and just generally keeping David entertained. Zoe and Max are both picking up some Japanese phrases, too. I know how to say thank you — mostly because of Mr. Roboto.
